CASE STUDY

Polymetal Oxygen Plant Shipment

Polymetal, one of the largest Russian mining companies, is executing a major construction project with the building of an ore enrichment plant in a remote region of the Russian Far East.

Elements of this complex shipment included:

  • 14 pieces of out of gauge industrial equipment
  • Break bulk cargo
  • Container cargo

  • The items originated in central Europe, which created the additional challenge of ensuring that land transportation was also in compliance with European regulations.

In order to comply with Russian customs regulations, all the break bulk units and containers had to be delivered as a single shipment, documented on a single Bill of Lading. This was a challenge, because break bulk units had to be delivered to the Port of Masan, and containerized cargo had to be delivered at the Port of Pusan. The logistical solution to this was to arrange for shipment of the break bulk cargo to the Port of Pusan, where it was consolidated with the containers for a single shipment to Vladivostok.

The final leg of the journey was the most difficult to execute. Haulage from the Port of Vladivostok to the Oxygen Plant construction site required navigation through a remote region with minimal infrastructure. It required careful selection of highly qualified operators and coordination with a number of authorities to receive clearance for the inland heavy hauls.

The success of this transportation project was possible due to TNI's service history with the mining industry, strong business ties in Russia and deep understanding of the intricacies of land transportation in the Russian Far East.
