HUMANITARIAN CARGO

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is the federal agency responsible for managing civilian foreign aid. It is a valuable service that helps disadvantaged countries around the world.

Industry Background
USAID administers programs in low income countries to assist with a variety of humanitarian issues, including disaster relief, poverty relief and economic development.

The US government purchases American agricultural commodities, and then invites carriers to quote on delivery. This food aid is used exclusively for programs that protect human health in critical need regions around the world, and companies like Trans-Net (TNI) handle the transportation of this life saving cargo.

Patriotic Participant
TNI is the appointed agent in the United States for several foreign flag carriers serving the USAID program, most notably Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

CASE STUDY

USAID Appointed Agent

Commodities processed through government aid programs are intended to provide a continuous flow of vital food aid to protect the health of children, women, elderly and the poor.

In addition to regions with long term food security problems, emergency conditions like the earthquake in Haiti create short term food security challenges that also required large scale solutions from government sponsored charitable programs.

Trans-NET serves as a vessel broker for these humanitarian goods. We represent the water carrier or vessel owner to the governments and NGOs participating in the food aid programs. The agency services we provide to those participating in the USAID program include:
  • Identify potential cargo
  • Prepare contract proposals
  • Arrange final cargo bookings
  • Process management throughout
  • Issue resolution
While most food aid is destined for Africa, the scope of the program provides humanitarian and emergency assistance to millions of people in 45 countries. Trans-NET is proud of our small role in contributing to the goal of conquering world hunger.
